A common question to someone that is new to the world of brass instruments is how to find the best trumpet for students. As easy as the answer can be, many people make the mistake of buying the wrong horn. There are many different ways to get an instrument when you are just starting out. You can borrow one from your school or even rent one from a local music store. The best option - in my opinion - is to purchase your own and there are many different ways to do that, too.Knowing what you're looking for is probably the most important thing that you need to consider when shopping for a new horn. For the most part, you will want to stay away from most horns that are made in China. The majority of them are made out of materials and with workmanship that is not up to the standards of horns made elsewhere. Usually, these horns will fall apart after only short periods of use. Granted, there are exceptions out there, but are few and far between. One of the only recommended horn builders from China is Carol Trumpets, who have a reputation for making a good quality product.Probably the best deal that you're going to be able to find on a new instrument is to pick up a used one. You can try looking in the local paper, classified ads, or even your local music store to find yourself a good deal. If searching locally isn't enough, you can expand your search to include online resources like eBay or other shopping sites, trumpet forums, or from online music stores from all over the world.A used horn is a great idea, especially since most beginning musicians don't play for longer than a year or two. It also lets you buy a better quality trumpet for the same amount of money as a brand new one of lesser quality. One great deal available on a used horn is an Olds Ambassador. These horns can be picked up for under a hundred bucks. The ones that are considered the best Ambassadors are the older one built in the Los Angeles, CA factory. These will usually run a few hundred dollars. Olds made these trumpets to play as well, or better, than most professional models. They are also well-built and have excellent valves. If you don't like the idea of playing on a horn that someone else has played on, don't be afraid. A good cleaning will remove any germs that were left from the previous owner. If a horn is in really bad shape, you can always have it thoroughly inspected and cleaned by your local repair person. If still not convinced and absolutely have to have a brand new horn, be prepared to spend a little more money. For student model trumpets, you can expect to pay a few hundred dollars for a well-built instrument. You should also stick to some well-known brand name horns to ensure that you will have an instrument that is built to last. There are many different reputable manufacturers out there. Yamaha and Jupiter, for example, have made great strides in recent years and actually produce well-built student model horns. Getzen is a company that has been around for ages and still makes great instruments to this day, and also has some of the best valves in the business. There are also great student models made by some of the better-known builders such as Kanstul and Bach, who make quality horns at every level.
